ISN'T IT ILLEGAL TO SET OFF FIREWORKS IN AN URBAN SETTING?
Seems to me like I should NOT be hearing this many going off here at 11:51 pm in Over the Rhine.... especially not this stinking close to my apartment building.

Yes the annoying peeps are most probably breaking the law.
If you want to legally do it you need to get a Special event permit. That costs you $20 and a lot of time to get through the red tape.
The big problem is that at least a quarter of what you heard was probably not fireworks. I worked an off-duty detail in Norwood on New Years Eve of 2000, and we actually heard AK47s being fired in the air down the hill in Lincoln Heights.
Unfortunately, with the idiots firing weapons in the air, the angry spouses beating and knifing each other, the fools that will shoot at a policeman over a pint of ice cream, and the prostitutes and drug dealers running holiday specials within a couple blocks of your apartment building . . . the CPD's understaffed third shift misses a few unauthorized Roman Candles and the occasional teen drinker manages to slip the dragnet.
i totally understand that our police are understaffed and overworked. Perhaps if the penalties were stiffer the occasional teen drinker that would get caught would keep others away more successfully. I dunno what the solution is.
cool, though, that you could potentially get a permit to do your fireworks. I hear its the same way with bonfires in town.
how annoying -- tonight at the hotel they got us sparklers. It set off the fire alarms. Celebrating 4th of July in South Africa is hilarious!
i want to know who is selling some of these because some of them must be illegal to even buy...the pictures of the wedding mall look awesome, by the way!
OH THE HUMANITY! The whistling, the popping, the sonic BOOM-ing!! Will it ever end?! It has sounded like the grand finale on Labor Day for the past 3 hours - in the lot next door!!
It has become a neighborhood tradition . . .
Shoot your loud, annoying fireworks off all night, AND make sure they all land in Steve's big back yard so he will have something to do tomorrow while you sleep off your holiday cheer.
